Capturing Memories: A Journey with an Amazing Family

As a photographer, there are certain families that become near and dear to my heart, and this family is one of them. I’ve had the incredible honor of photographing them for years, starting from their engagement session to their wedding, maternity photos, newborn portraits, and now updated family photos each year. What’s even more special? This wonderful couple and I go way back to our college days, and I’ve been fortunate enough to witness and document their beautiful journey as a family.

Why Fall is the Perfect Time for Family Photos

One of my favorite times to photograph families is in the fall. There’s something magical about the vibrant colors that pop during this season. The reds, oranges, and yellows in the trees create a stunning backdrop that perfectly complements a family’s natural warmth and love. It’s truly the best time to capture memories that will be cherished for years to come.

When it comes to timing, I usually suggest scheduling the session about two hours before sunset—if that timing works for the kids. The key with young children is to plan the session around their happy times, which is usually not right before meals when they are hungry or when they are tired. Keeping kids in a good mood during the shoot is essential for those candid, joyful moments.

Why Two Hours Before Sunset?

As much as I love photographing during the golden hour (that magical time right before sunset), I’ve found that shooting two hours before sunset often provides the best of both worlds. The sessions begins with light that does not create harsh shadows and still provides me the opportunity to get light in your eyes. As the session progresses and we near sunset, the lighting becomes soft and warm, creating that dreamy golden glow we all love.

Photographing this family over the years has been such a joy, and it’s been incredible to watch their love grow and their family evolve. From their wedding day to welcoming their children and capturing those yearly milestones, it’s an honor to preserve these special moments.

Every year, I look forward to our fall photo sessions, knowing that I’m not just photographing a family—I’m capturing memories, emotions, and love that will be treasured forever.
